The event, as they put it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uxcamp.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">themselves<\/a>, is an <em>&#8220;unconference born from the desire to bring together the industry and academic communities to share knowledge in an open environment&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike a traditional conference, UXcamp is shaped by the attendees themselves. Anyone willing to contribute and learn is welcome to join and give a talk, workshop or start a discussion.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s my take on how things went down&#8230;\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<h1>The event<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_101657.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3875 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_101657-600x600.jpg\" alt=\"The madness session\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_101657-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_101657-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_101657-315x315.jpg 315w, https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_101657-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0event starts with a so called &#8220;Madness session&#8221; in which anyone participating is welcome to pitch their talk\/workshop\/discussion so that the rest of the participants can figure out which of them they would like to attend. A schedule of the day is quickly drafted by the organisers, pinned to a wall and off we go!<\/p>\n<p>[robo-gallery id=&#8221;3878&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h1>The line up<\/h1>\n<p>This year there were plenty of interesting things to talk about, including (but certainly not limited to):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;An introvert&#8217;s guide to user research&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marys_point\" target=\"_blank\">@marys_point<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;HCI and UX Concerns in self driving cars&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/debardey\" target=\"_blank\">@debardey<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;UX and robotics, bridging the gap&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/METiger\" target=\"_blank\">@METiger<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Interaction design for VR&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doronhirsch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Doron Hirsch<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Beyond product features &#8211; How to get noticed by early adopters&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; by\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IraNezhynska\">@<span class=\"u-linkComplex-target\">IraNezhynska<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>&#8230;and many more!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was a great line-up, but unfortunately it&#8217;s impossible to attend all of the talks\/workshops\/discussions, and so many of them happen at the same time that I had to make a choice and ended up attending\u00a0these ones&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Mapping the Experience<\/h2>\n<p>by <a href=\"http:\/\/nataliarey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Natalia Rey<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_110138.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3879\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_110138-630x316.jpg\" alt=\"img_20160924_110138\" width=\"630\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_110138-630x316.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_110138-315x158.jpg 315w, https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_110138-768x385.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Natalia Rey, From IBM, held a workshop explaining to us the basics of creating maps of a user&#8217;s experience, a tool that can help us in understanding better how people\u00a0feel as they follow a series of steps\u00a0in a particular\u00a0context.\u00a0We were divided into groups and under her guidance, we tried to map a very simple scenario of our morning rituals before going to work, but of course, the method can be expanded to cover much more complex scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>[robo-gallery id=&#8221;3899&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0could tell you all about the workshop, but I believe Natalia explains it so much better, so head over to her <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@nataliarey\/uxcamp-dublin-2016-602678edad69#.secvbk4p8\" target=\"_blank\">Medium post<\/a> where you can read the specifics\u00a0about it.<\/p>\n<h3>The main takeaways:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>By structuring\u00a0the way you collect your user data based on actions or steps that are taken along the way to accomplish a goal, you are able to compare them much easier across users.<\/li>\n<li>Experience maps can be visualised in many different ways\u00a0depending on what you are looking for (e.g. timelines or emotional charts). Be creative and experiment with different types of data visualisations which will help you to find the underlying patterns and insights from your user&#8217;s behaviour.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Forget time management and multitasking. How to actually become organised and productive<\/h2>\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rochelle-carr-78362b91\" target=\"_blank\">Rochelle Carr<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG-20160924-WA0002.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3881\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG-20160924-WA0002-630x302.jpeg\" alt=\"img-20160924-wa0002\" width=\"630\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG-20160924-WA0002-630x302.jpeg 630w, https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG-20160924-WA0002-315x151.jpeg 315w, https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG-20160924-WA0002-768x368.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nRochelle Carr, from IBM, gave us a few tips that have helped her in becoming better organised with her planning.<\/p>\n<h3>Tha main takeaways:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><em>&#8220;Failing to plan is planning to fail&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Alan Lakein<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compromise + Commitment<\/strong> = Successful plan<\/li>\n<li>A good long term plan should be flexible, specific to the project and, most importantly it must include some <strong>&#8220;buffer weeks&#8221;<\/strong> to accommodate any\u00a0unforeseen issues<\/li>\n<li>Analyse your\u00a0daily behaviour\u00a0to identify your <strong>&#8220;Good brain time&#8221;<\/strong>, those moments of the day when you are the most effective for certain tasks. For example, some people have a dip of energy after lunch and should therefore leave the mechanical tasks for this part of the day and the hard creative thinking for the mornings.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How to survive your first big client<\/h2>\n<p>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carolinagmznrj.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Carolina Gomez Naranjo<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_145535.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3882\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_145535-630x299.jpg\" alt=\"img_20160924_145535\" width=\"630\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_145535-630x299.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_145535-315x149.jpg 315w, https:\/\/www.bluehair.co\/corner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_20160924_145535-768x364.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn the last presentation of the day, Carolina Gomez Naranjo from <a href=\"https:\/\/icemobile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ice Mobile<\/a>,\u00a0explained to us how she has managed to deal with the challenges faced while working as a consultant for big clients, where you are seen as an outsider.<\/p>\n<h3>The main takeaways:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Question\u00a0EVERYTHING:<\/strong>\u00a0Not only is it a best practice to keep on asking questions to get to the bottom of things, but in big organisations where\u00a0teams are large, some things tend to be taken for granted as &#8220;we&#8217;ve always done things this way&#8221;, regardless of whether or not it is the right thing to do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Become your client&#8217;s BFF:<\/strong> Being friendly and social with your clients creates a more amicable environment and you are less likely to come across conflicts.
